Become more comfortable giving intramuscular injections

 (1) The preferred injection sites are marked below

         - The most common being the triangle located on the horses neck. 

          - This is located by placing your palm (fingers towards the ears) on the hollow space

             directly in front of the shoulder. 

                               - Less common sites are: the back of the thigh (marked in orange)

                                 and the chest (marked with yellow)

    (2)Pinch the skin within the injection site and insert the needle.

       Make sure that your needle is pushed deep into the skin.

 

 

 

     (3) Pull back on the syringe:

           - If blood appears in the syringe then you have hit a blood vessel.

              Take the needle out and start over again at a different site about 2 inches away.

            - If you pull back and no blood appears, inject the medication.

 

 

                    (4) With one smooth pull, remove your needle.
