Oral exams are performed under sedation with a full-mouth speculum in order that the entire oral cavity can be examined safely and thoroughly.

Not every horse needs "teeth "floating" every year however a yearly oral exam is recommended for early detection of common dental problems.

Dental prophylaxis (teeth floating) is performed with power tools under sedation.  Dr. Tillotson has chosen this form of dentistry over "hand floating" for several reasons:

Efficiency:  small guarded grinding wheel allows easy access to all parts of the mouth

Effective:  With minimal physical exertion, the dental arcades can be balanced with precision.  The result of grinding can be evaluated visually during the procedure.

Gentle:   The specialized drill grinds a specific area of the tooth thus avoiding soft tissue trauma and bleeding from the mouth.
