We should also make it known that there have been reports of rabies in raccoons in the local area, and in foxes in Virginia.  There have also been reports out of Greensboro.  This is a clear reminder that we live in a rabies infected area and that our horses are at risk from local wildlife.  If not vaccinated, a rabies infection is fatal.  Vaccinations are a simple step we can take to keep our horses as safe as possible.

2/13/2012 Cushings disease.
You may have heard the term Cushings disease or seen PPID in the literature, they are in fact the same condition.  Cushings disease usually affects horses as they age.  The pituitary gland begins to over produce glucocorticoids.  These high levels of glucocorticoids circulate around the entire body in the blood, having a deleterious affect as they do so.  A Cushings horse will typically have a very rough coat, often curly that they do not shed out effectively.  They may have a potbellied appearance and may be subjected to an increase risk of other serious diseases.  For the first time we now have an FDA approved treatment for Cushings, Prascend.  To learn more about how Pracsend could help your horse with managing Cushings disease click here.
